Coventry Living

Red Queen is uniquely placed in the heart of Canley, a popular student neighbourhood in Southwest Coventry. We’re less than a 20 minute walk from the University of Warwick’s campus and just a 30 minute bus journey from Coventry city centre. We boast fantastic transport links into the city and beyond with Leamington Spa and Birmingham both reachable in under an hour.

Our closest city, Coventry, is a place rooted in history and heritage and leading the way as a vibrant destination for students. Known as the ‘Three Spired City’, for the church and cathedral spires that form the most striking elements of the city’s landscape, Coventry has been named the UK’s City of Culture for 2021, which means that there are lots of exciting things happening here. New bars, restaurants, attractions and local businesses are popping up all over the city, helping to put Coventry on the map as a dynamic place to be.

There’s never been a better time to study here and experience all that this great city has to offer.

Take a look at the map to discover some of our favourite local spots.

Culture

The UK City of Culture for 2021 needs no further introduction. Coventry has an eclectic mix of inspiring arts and culture venues, events and experiences for you to enjoy. Explore the war-damaged ruins of the city’s magnificent cathedral or take a tour of the iconic Kenilworth Castle and gardens, built to impress Queen Elizabeth 1st.

A trip to the Herbert Art Gallery, home of Coventry’s Art, Culture & Heritage, never fails to disappoint, whilst motor-heads will want to check out Coventry’s Transport Collection which houses 240 cars, 100 motorcycles and over 200 bicycles. Did you know that Coventry was actually the birthplace of the bicycle?

If you fancy a day trip, then we definitely recommend Warwick Castle. Wander around the beautiful grounds, try the Dungeon experience and explore 1,100 years of fascinating history. There’s also Stratford-Upon-Avon, Shakespeare’s birthplace and home of the Royal Shakespeare Theatre which features an incredible programme of performances throughout the year with discounted tickets for students. You might even see a famous face or two!

Eating & Drinking

Coventry boasts a delicious array of restaurants and bars across the city for you to explore. From popular chain restaurants, to quirky independents, we’ve got something to suit all tastes and budgets. For one of the best Sunday Roasts in the city, head to The Greyhound Inn, just north of the centre. Our historic pubs are always popular with tourists. try The Old Windmill, the oldest pub in the city dating back to 1451, for some real ale and salty snacks. Closer to Red Queen, you’ll find some tasty takeaways and local restaurants like The Farmhouse. And if you want to sample a traditional regional dish, try a Coventry Godcake – tasty triangular puffed pastries filled with sweet mincemeat traditionally given by godparents to their godchildren on New Year’s along with a blessing for the year ahead.

Nightlife

We may be small, but Coventry still boasts some of the best student nightlife in the UK! Head to Kasbah, an institution here in Coventry and one of the best independent clubs in the UK, boasting live acts and great student deals. If you prefer to sip cocktails and chat with friends the city has some great options, like Passion For Cocktails on the edge of the city.

Shopping

From high street shops to independent boutiques, you’ll be spoilt for choice with the shopping options in Coventry. Fargo Village is an artistic hub where you’ll find independent shops and markets selling vintage clothes, vinyl records, retro comics, food, drink and more. There’s also West Orchards shopping centre in the heart of the city – an enclosed mall with loads of high street brand names and food outlets in one place.

Universities

Just a stone’s throw from Red Queen, 5 minutes by car or 20 minutes on public transport, Warwick University is one of the most prestigious universities in the world, with a global reputation for academic and teaching excellence and student satisfaction. Over in the city centre of Coventry, Coventry University is 10 minutes by car from Red Queen. It’s home to 50,000 students world-wide and offers exceptional placement and career opportunities. Wherever you study in Coventry, you’ll be perfectly placed here at Red Queen.

Canley

Closer to home, Canley is a bustling student hub with lots to see and do without having to venture too far. Our favourite local pub is the Phantom Coach, which serves up British pub classics, burgers and light bites with a tasty range of vegetarian and vegan options and some great drinks deals. There are also some great restaurant chains nearby like Nando’s, Subway, Greggs, Starbucks, Domino’s Pizza and McDonalds.

We have a Sainsbury’s and a Co-op food right on our doorstep and Cannon Park shopping centre is just a 20-minute walk away. It’s a great local alternative to city centre shopping with free parking and a great selection of shops and food outlets including a big Tesco’s.

If you fancy getting creative with your cooking, take a trip to the Warwick Oriental Supermarket (just near the University of Warwick) which offers authentic oriental food, drinks and ingredients.
